The Kulun-Ata State Nature Reserve was established on August 11, 2004, by Order No. 598 of the Government of the Kyrgyz Republic, initiated by Asan Borombaev, a distinguished worker in nature protection in the Kyrgyz Republic.
The total area of the reserve is 27,540.2 hectares, which includes:
Specially protected area (core zone) – 21,268.0 hectares
Buffer zone – 674.6 hectares
Protected area – 5,597.6 hectares
Forested area – 3,224.7 hectares. The condition of the forested area is good. It consists of two forest sectors:
1. Töng-Zoo Forestry
2. Kulun-Ata Forest Sector
1. There are 35 species of mammals found in the reserve:
1. Brown bear (grizzly bear)
2. Mountain sheep, Argali (wild sheep, ram)
3. Porcupine
4. Snow leopard (Irbis, snow tiger)
5. Stone marten (marten, European marten)
There are 81 species of birds in the reserve. Five of these species are: 1. Sparrowhawk (ylaachyn) 2. Mountain goose (mountain swan) 3. Golden eagle (bürküt) 4. Saker falcon (itelgi) 5. Steppe eagle (bozdon küykö)
In total, there are 1,006 plant species in the reserve. Three of these species are listed in the Red Book: 1. Persian robinia (Robinia persica) 2. Red bent (Alaia deviata) 3. Siberian apple (Malus sieversii)
Includes 1 species of amphibians: 1. Green toad (green toad) Includes 1 type of fish: 1. Turkestan catfish (Turkestan region)
Lake Orta - Kul was formed tectonically and is surrounded by mountains on four sides. The area of the lake mirror is 329.2 hectares. The area of the glacial cover is 1416.3 hectares.
The large Kulun-us Lake surpasses Lake Ortho -Kul in area and abundance of water. Length
